Embrace better sleep hygiene with these bedroom design tips

Embrace better sleep hygiene with these bedroom design tips.

Getting enough high-quality sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your body and mind. Research shows that sleep is as important to your health as diet, nutrition and exercise, which is why it’s important to make your sleeping environment conducive to a good night’s rest. These tips will help you create a bedroom designed for good quality sleep.

1. Choose calming colours

Colour therapy, also known as chromotherapy, suggests that certain colours can have a calming effect on your mood. Experts say white, blue, yellow and silver are most commonly associated with sleep and relaxation. Using these colours in light tones may help lull you into a deeper sleep.

2. Opt for softer lighting

Research shows that bright, artificial lighting, such as LED bulbs, trick our brain into thinking its daytime, throwing off our natural sleep rhythm. Most sleep experts will recommend limiting your screen time before bed to help with this phenomenon. But you can also replace your lightbulbs with amber-hue bulbs and set them on dimmer switches to help.

3. Keep the temperature down

If you’re having trouble falling asleep, a colder room could help your body cool down enough to reach a level of deeper, restorative sleep. According to research, the ideal room temperature for better sleep is around 18 degrees Celsius. If you’re a hot sleeper, consider using a fan to cool your room and add a bit of white noise. You may also want to invest in bedding that wicks sweat and provides a cooling effect such as linen or bamboo.
